On June 21, Beijing time, the Dallas Wings defeated the Connecticut Sun 86-83, achieving the team's first two-game winning streak of the season. Li Yuanyu played her second game since joining the Wings, logging 24 minutes on the court, shooting 2 of 6 from the field, 1 of 2 from beyond the arc, and hitting all 6 free throws, contributing 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. Her individual playing time, scoring, and rebounding all set season highs. After the game, Li Yuanyu gave an interview.
Reporter: What do you consider your main takeaway from this game? You were close to a double-double and played the entire fourth quarter.
Li Yuanyu: I think this was a crucial victory for us, and we needed this result. I hope we can build on this momentum. Personally, I felt a bit off in the first quarter and was a little nervous, but the coach gave me a chance and told me, "Just be yourself and don't overthink it," which helped me relax a lot.
In the second half, I felt like I gradually found my rhythm and started to play more aggressively. However, this is just a regular season game, and we hope to maintain this level of play. This victory definitely gave me a lot of confidence, and I'm really happy right now.
Reporter: How important is it to maintain physical contact in the paint and to get to the free-throw line for controlling the pace of the game?
Li Yuanyu: Well, I have a larger build, but I'm still learning how to use my body better. Sometimes I hesitate to stay in the paint because I'm worried about three seconds in the key, so I tend to instinctively move outside. But after this game, I feel like I should stay in the paint more and be more proactive in using my physicality.
Reporter: You also made a three-pointer after a hand-off play. You mentioned before that you want to find a balance between inside and outside play; how important is that balance?
Li Yuanyu: I practice three-pointers mainly to create space for my teammates. If I stay in the paint all the time, it gets too crowded inside. Now, I feel like the defensive pressure when shooting from the outside isn't as intense, and I can get some open looks, which makes me happy. I will continue to practice my three-pointers while also strengthening my inside game.
Reporter: Last question, how helpful is tomorrow's practice for understanding the team's tactical system? Do you think training helps you adapt better in terms of understanding terminology?
Li Yuanyu: Training makes me feel grounded; without it, I can get nervous during games. We do a lot of tactical drills before games, whether it's targeting the opponent or refining our own system, and these help me adapt better to the pace of the game. I can also learn and reinforce tactical requirements during practice.
The Wings' next game is at 3 AM on June 23, Beijing time, and Li Yuanyu will strive to deliver an even better performance to help the team aim for a third consecutive victory.
