The Chinese Taipei men's volleyball team finished 7th in the recently concluded 2025 Asian Men's Volleyball Championship. Star player Chang Yu-sheng, who plays in Japan, noted that while there were some details that needed improvement, he believes the team can make the necessary adjustments before the World University Games in Germany in July.

Reflecting on his first experience with the younger players, Chang Yu-sheng, who scored 36 points against Pakistan, remarked that losing to Bahrain was particularly disappointing. He felt that the Chinese Taipei men's volleyball team had the upper hand, but the home advantage and the cheering from the crowd made it challenging, affecting even him. Team captain Chang You-chen shared that the opponents were very loud throughout the match against Bahrain, with some fans bringing their own speakers and microphones to sing, jokingly saying, “I felt like I was going to be exorcised.”
With Chang Yu-sheng's addition, Chang You-chen believes it has been a significant help. Having a stable offensive output allows others to focus on their roles and support each other. Senior player Chang also shares techniques and details about handling the ball, which has taught him a lot. Head coach Huang Hong-yu pointed out that Chang Yu-sheng's presence provides a strong attacking option, increasing the team's reliance on him. He hopes other players will also strengthen themselves and not place all the burden on him.

“I came back to help everyone grow more,” said Chang Yu-sheng. After finishing the season in the Japanese SV League, he only started training with his teammates at the end of May. He recalled that deciding to represent the Chinese Taipei men's volleyball team at the World University Games was influenced by his former mentor Chen Jian-zhen when he was 19. During their conversation, Chen encouraged him, believing this year was a great opportunity. He feels that by mentoring the younger players, he is not only helping them but also learning himself.
Chang Yu-sheng stated that leading the team as a senior presents a different challenge. He sees himself as a stabilizing force, aiming to maintain consistent performance while providing reassurance during turbulent moments, ensuring teammates are not led astray by opponents. He praised the potential of the athletes participating in the World University Games, noting that even though most are competing internationally for the first time this year, their positive mindset makes the experience enjoyable for him.
Following the Asian Championship, the next stop for the Chinese Taipei men's volleyball team is the World University Games starting on July 16. Chang Yu-sheng stated, “The goal for the World University Games is to reach the top eight. By then, we will face strong competitors from around the world. With the experience from the Asian Championship, we can address the challenges posed by taller players and enhance our team's competitiveness.”
