Two Jamaican Olympic medalists in athletics are acquiring Turkish citizenship and are expected to compete in the Los Angeles Olympics.

Two Jamaican athletes who will stand on the podium at the 2024 Paris Olympics will receive aid funds and switch their nationality to Turkey. According to Reuters on the 21st, Beijing time: "Roger Stoner and Lendry Campbell will become Turkish citizens." The agents for both athletes have confirmed their decision to acquire Turkish citizenship."

Stoner, who chose to acquire Turkish citizenship

The Trinidad and Tobago News reported on the 20th about Stoner and Campbell's acquisition of Turkish citizenship for the first time, stating, "Stoner and Campbell will receive $500,000 in citizenship aid. The Turkish side will also pay both athletes a monthly living allowance."

Stoner set an Olympic record of 70 meters in the discus throw at the Paris Olympics last year, winning the men's discus championship. Campbell ranked third in the men's shot put event at the Paris Olympics.

The World Athletics Federation stated: "Athletes who acquire citizenship to represent a country in international competitions can only compete as representatives of their new country after three years of citizenship. Athletes without national team experience can represent their new country after one year of citizenship." Additionally, there is flexibility in applying the international competition ban period for athletes who are exiled due to political persecution, but it is likely that the "three-year rule" will apply to Stoner and Campbell.

Campbell will acquire Turkish citizenship

In Jamaica, a powerhouse in athletics, aside from sprinters, athletes in other events do not receive sufficient financial support. Turkey, which did not win any medals in athletics at the Paris Olympics, has formulated a long-term plan to secure medals at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with "facilitating citizenship" chosen as one of the strategies. Given the current situation, even if Stoner and Campbell cannot compete within three years, they can represent Turkey at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
